A day after announcing the closure of its 1News website and app, TVNZ confirmed plans to buy a technology platform to enable converged selling, optimisation and measurement its online and offline audiences.

Dubbed “Total TV”, the proposed system will align transactions on linear and TVNZ+.

“TVNZ’s preference is that the Total TV technology solution(s) will work with TVNZ’s existing linear trafficking and digital ad-server products, however, the solution(s) could form a complete end-to-end build,” a registration of interest document posted this morning said.

Following registrations of interest, TVNZ said it expected to operate a competitive dialogue process ahead of issuing an tender to shortlisted suppliers.

Yesterday, all TVNZ staff were called to meet and to go over a proposal to find $30 million in savings.

In August, the state-owned broadcaster reported a loss of $85 million after booking significant impairments, down from a profit of $1.7 million in 2023. Revenue also fell by $39 million year-on-year.

As well as supporting improved commercial opportunities, the Total TV programme would transform TVNZ’s capabilities and support new ways of working, “offering simplicity, scale and efficiency as well as improved audience optimisation and measurement”, the notice said.

“TVNZ expects the opportunity to be of interest to companies that can demonstrate proven commercial media tech solution experience,” it said.

TVNZ has been pushing to progressively re-platform its broadcast-based technology to better meet the reality and expectations of audiences for “digital first” content.
