The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA) is looking to simplify its network and security operations by converging them into a single platform, as well as improve security with a secure access service edge (SASE) solution.
In a request for information document, DITRDCA said is looking at integrating software-defined wide area networks, zero-trust network access and security services like secure internet gateways (SIG), cloud access security brokers, and firewall-as-a-service.
DITRDCA wants to “ensure consistent and secure access for users regardless of location, device, or application, while reducing operational overhead associated with managing multiple-point solutions and ensure scalability for future growth and integration with cloud-native services”.
Currently, the department operates a hybrid cloud infrastructure comprising of on-premises, private, and public cloud environments.
With increased remote work, cloud adoption, and digital transformation initiatives, DITRDCA requires a robust, scalable and secure network architecture.
Its security posture includes a range of disparate solutions, including traditional firewalls, web gateways and virtual private networks.
The SASE product must also be able to adhere to security and compliance requirements, including data residency and sovereignty.
All sensitive data must be stored in compliance with Australian data residency laws, while sensitive data processed by the solution must remain within Australian borders or IRAP-certified locations.
The software vendors should also provide certifications and demonstrate a commitment to ongoing compliance through regular security assessments and audits.
Additionally, a detailed incident response plan must also be included on how they will notify the department of a security breach or significant event impacting the SASE platform.
Submissions must be in by 16 December 2024.
