Indigenous Australian ICT and cyber security provider Baidam has teamed up with Infoblox, a global cloud networking and security services provider, in a joint effort to take down fake websites and scam domains using the Domain Name System (DNS).

The venture, named Baidam Takedown Services, will track and remove stolen proprietary information from online forums or fraudulent hosts, including credentials, personally identifiable information and credit card data.

It will operate outside Baidam’s Gundan Security Operations Centre in Brisbane, Queensland.

Jack Reis, CEO at Baidam, said fraudulent domains are a rising threat for any organisation, from sole traders to major enterprises.

However, indigenous and regional businesses can become particularly vulnerable to internet fraud.

“There are parts of Australia where the internet is very new or not available yet at all,” said Reis. “It’s one of the most important resources we can bring to the bush, but lack of experience and education on cybersecurity and online scams can leave indigenous people and businesses more vulnerable.”

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) National Anti-Scam Centre, Australians lost $2.74 billion to scams, including investment, identity theft, and online shopping scams, in 2023, while First Nations people reported almost double the number of scams in 2023 compared with 2022.

Infoblox A/NZ MD Scott Morris said internet fraud could be the spark that ignites other malicious activity.

“We’re seeing internet fraud playing a more prominent role in how cybercriminals infiltrate organisations in Australia,” he said. “Our takedown service helps companies neutralise fraudulent domains impersonating them for criminal activities.”
