Backup and disaster recovery software vendor Veeam is making its Veeam Data Cloud product available on Microsoft’s New Zealand hyperscale cloud region.

The announcement means customers will be able to back their data up entirely on New Zealand shores for the first time.

Previously, organisations with strict data residency requirements were unable to use public cloud because data was often backed up offshore.

“We consistently hear from organisations in New Zealand that having their critical data stored onshore is hugely important,” said Gary Mitchell, vice president of Veeam A/NZ.

Bringing Veeam Data Cloud to New Zealand would allow many local organisations to improve their data resilience even as the volume of cyber incidents continued to rise, he said.

One organisation poised to benefit from the development is Hato Hone St John.

“With four physical data centres across Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and over 7,000 active Microsoft 365 users, we’ve relied on Veeam and its partners to provide the data resilience essential for our operations,” said Hato Hone St John national technology infrastructure manager Andrew Fletcher.

“As we continue to expand our coverage across the Microsoft suite on Veeam Data Cloud, this new cloud region offers us enhanced options for availability, scalability, and improved data sovereignty, ensuring our data remains within New Zealand in the face of uncertainty.“

Microsoft NZ managing diretor Vanessa Sorenson said Veeam’s move would provide local organisations with more assurance that they can take advantage of hyperscale cloud without compromising security and resilience.

“We live in a digital world, and data is even more precious than ever at a time when businesses are now using generative AI and other tools that rely heavily on data to deliver personalised services,” she said.

“It’s no longer about just recovering data if something disrupts your systems – having access to that data and services at all times is a non-negotiable.”
